My family didn't know how to work with or care for hair like mine, so it was regularly a frizzy mess. I tried chemically relaxing my hair to burn the curl out in the hopes of having silky straight hair - spoiler alert - it never worked the way I wanted. I grew up hearing my mom tell me to give up on my dream of having beautiful hair because the type of hair I had wasn't capable of being beautiful in any sense.
